Whenever I get a new throw in the mail (or any package for that matter) I feel like a kid on Christmas morning.  I practically tear the box open as if I’ve been starved and the contents inside are a three-course meal. Sometimes I’m happy with the throw. Sometimes I’m ecstatic about it. Sometimes though, I feel like I’ve fallen prey to the hype. Recently I received a package from competition judge Nick Gumlaw and his new company Spin Dynamics.  Inside, a throw he calls the “Smooth Move”. I’ve heard good things, so let’s see how this badboy measures up.
Here are some of the specs and info I received from Spin Dynamics. The Smooth Move was designed by competition Judge Nick Gumlaw using all local/American shops/processes and was precisely machined by a shop that regularly holds tight tolerances to military/ NASA specification. Designed with "grind style" of play in mind. The slightly flared rims allow for a smooth feel while grinding, and reduce friction by reducing the surface area in contact with your hand/arm. In my opinion this is one of the best palm grinding yoyos I have ever thrown.
The recessed caps, made of Lexan polycarbonate (a key material in the manufacturing of bulletproof glass) add a couple of grams of weight in a key structural area, and also allow for the execution of sideways thumb grinds. Now, I’m not the best at sideways style finger grinds, but this puppy makes it easy!  In combination with the large drop down rim, they allow for your finger to stay at a constant radius while performing finger grinds, thus keeping the yo-yo's orbit at a consistent speed. The slight overhang around the polished raw aluminum rim allows for easier execution of palm grinds by softening the edge and reducing the surface area that touches your palm. Like I said before…palm magic.
Each yo-yo is polished pre and post anodizing to allow for a smooth, even finish and remove imperfections. The polished aluminum rim adds a unique and classy element, very eye-catching.  I’ve shown this to a couple of friends who don’t throw, but have seen  my collection, and I received responses along the lines of “that’s the coolest looking one you have”. Caps are individually soda blasted to create the frosted look and "SM" logo. Badass.
The Smooth Moves use a stainless steel helicoil insert to stabilize the axle system and provide wear resistance, allowing the Smooth Move to stay smooth after heavy use and the repeated threading/unthreading of the halves. This is a really nice touch, especially considering the triangle knots one might get into while attempting wild grinds.

So how does it play? I don’t want to repeat myself but this thing is smooth. It takes one awful throw to make it vibe. Weighing just under 65 grams, it hits the bottom of the string with authority, but feels light on the string. I want to compare its throw feel to the Markmont Next.
The “p-pad” response system gives tight binds and doesn’t slip. I was really impressed by this choice of response because you can easily sub in new pads or silicone without having to scrape out excess muck.
I have to say that you will have one heck of a time removing the bearing.  The bearing seat reminded me of my Stampede. It’s extremely tight, but I view this as a positive trait. I think it contributes to the overall smooth feel. I swapped a one drop ten ball size C bearing in there and this puppy sleeps for days.

I’d recommend this throw to anyone looking for something undersized that not only plays and feels impressive, but looks unique and really is just gorgeous. I’m really excited about this new company and cannot wait to see what they come out with next!
